In October of 1990, President George HW Bush imposed the Luxury Tax in an attempt to reduce the $500 billion dollar deficit.

The tax saw over 100 companies go out of business, 25,000 direct manufacturing jobs and 75,000 indirect jobs lost.

This act devastated the United States boat building industry.
